Planning the honeymoon of your dreams is easier than you may think! Here are the steps to making it a relaxing and fabulous beginning for your life together.

1. Brainstorm together the list of things that are essential for you and the list of things that you can live without. Do you want to spend your days hit the surf and snorkeling, while sippinga mai tai in the evening? Or do you prefer a more cultural trip, touring the piazzas of Italy and sampling local wines? Are you a city adventurer, preferring the urban jungle and killer clubs of New York?

2. Create a budget, and decide how you will fund the trip. Frequent flier miles and hotel points can be used to supplement your travel budget, and on-line honeymoon registries such as honeymoonwishes.com and thehoneymoon.com allow your guests to give you a gift they know you’ll love. All-inclusive resorts are great for trips where you need to know the exact cost, although we do recommend adding a little cushion to your budget for mini-excursions not included in the all-inclusive price, like swimming with the dolphins or touring the towns. 3. Talk to your travel agent and surf the web for ideas. Visit weatherbase.comto get seasonal weather info for the destinations you are considering. If you fall in love with a location where the weather is poor at the time of year when you are getting married, consider doing a weekend ‘mini-moon’ immediately following the wedding and then going on the honeymoon when the season is right. (Splitting the honeymoon into two parts also helps if you have limited vacation time, since most couples will take at least part of the week preceding the wedding off in order to handle last-minute wedding details. )

4. Choose your honeymoon destination and hotel.

5. Book your hotel and flights, as well as arrange for care for your children or pets. Make sure your passport is up to date, and make reservations (especially flight) in the name matching your passport and drivers license. In most cases it is best to make the reservations in your maiden name, since the marriage license is typically filed after the wedding day.

6. A couple of weeks before the honeymoon confirm all the details and tie up any loose ends.

  • Confirm hotel and flights, and review any changes in your airline’s baggage policies
  • If traveling abroad, exchange some cash for the local currency
  • Write a packing list of all the goodies you want to bring. (Don’t forget some fun lingerie!)
  • Pack your bags well in advance, particularly if you are honeymooning immediately after the wedding day. The week before your wedding you will have lots of last-minute details unrelated to the honeymoon, so it’s nice to be packed and ready to go!

7. Enjoy your trip!
