We hired a day-of coordinator for our wedding and it was the best thing we did. We worked with Afton from The Invisible Hostess and she made our day perfect.
Since we were having a backyard wedding we did not have the luxury of having any venue staff helping us along. I wanted to make sure that our family and friends could enjoy the day and not have to worry about details like 'are all the water pitchers full'? I had been to other weddings where they did not have coordinator and I saw mothers of the bride and grooms going around picking up napkins and fiddling with this or that, rather than being engaged in the wedding and reception, something I did not want for my mother.
Afton insured everything ran smoothly, from set up to take down. She was there all day, coordinated with the other vendors and kept everything in line. I didn't have to think of anything or worry about a thing the day of the wedding. No one did. It was all under control. I had a strong vision for the day and didn't want someone else to take away all the planning, I love that part! But Afton, helped me along, made sure we had everything covered and then put my plan into action and made our day come alive without a hitch. Having a day-of coordinator is the one piece of advice I give to any bride planning a wedding. So very worth it.
It’s hard to put a finger on what exactly our theme was, but when it comes down to it, the theme was us. Our wedding was very personal and unique to us. We wanted a cozy outdoor venue, so we went with our friend’s backyard. We choose purple and yellow as our main colors along with white to have poppy fun colors. I wanted to make most things ourselves, so it had a home spun feel which fit right in with the backyard venue. My husband is a talented photographer and has captured our life and adventures together so well, so we wanted to highlight that, the bushes lining the walkway to the backyard were full of pictures he had taken on our trips together, framed in white frames we gathered at thrift stores. (they now line the hallway to our bedroom). We both have an eye for design and a strong point of view, so it was easy to keep everything on track to fit together and be cohesive.
My husband is a photographer and so choosing the right photographer for our wedding was a big deal. We went to the Seattle Wedding Show and looked at all the photographer booths there, plus we had checked out others online. Out of all of the photographers we looked at only three of them caught our eye with their images. We decide to talk with each of our top three and were put off by the first two. Then we went to Alante Photography's booth at the wedding show and as soon as we talked to Loren, we were sold and knew they were the right people for the job. Both Loren and Kimberly asked about our wedding and our vision and it simply clicked. Alante Photography made the whole experience fun and enjoyable. They took the time to get to know us as people to make sure they captured us and our day appropriately. Although Loren was our photographer for the wedding, Kimberly was still engaged with us too.
Come wedding day, Loren was in-tune with what we wanted and he did not skip out on anything. He got snapshots of all the little details, things I never would have thought of. It was an easy experience and neither him nor his assistant felt in the way or awkward being a part of every step. Loren took the initiative to talk with the DJ and the day-of coordinator to ensure everyone was aligned on the events of the day. I also have a very large family which includes small children and he was patient with every single person. He did not get overwhelmed or annoyed by all of the shots we wanted and even handled the 3 year old's breakdowns well. The whole experience at the wedding was natural and easy, just simple. and the end result, simply stunning.
I am lucky to know a talented baker who supplied our wedding with yummy goodness. Kirsha Baldwin is the owner of Sassy Girl Bakery and her treats did not disappoint. For ease of serving and to fit with our backyard venue, we went with cupcakes in two flavors. We had a lemon cake with blueberry filling topped with butter cream-cream cheese frosting for my tastes and a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for the Kyle. Then we had a small two tiered cake for cutting and saving. All were so so delicious and wonderfully done in our colors.
We made the cupcakes personal and noted the flavors with pictures of us when we were young. The response to our baby pictures was overwhelming; it was a super fun personal touch. It even made our mothers cry! I don't think I have ever seen so many tears being shed at a cake table before.
We had a backyard wedding at our friend’s house in Shoreline, WA. It was very private and personal, just what we wanted. Guests even got to watch the sunset over the mountains from the front yard.
Make sure it is all about you and what you want it to be. You cannot make everyone happy and trying to accommodate others will just make the whole process more daunting. This is your day, make it about you, it really is the only day that you will get that chance.
We have been to many weddings and one thing we have always taken away from them is that the music makes the night. It was important for us that we had a DJ that could take cues from us and ensure that people were on the dancefloor having a good time. That is exactly what we got.
We hired Bamboo Beats for our wedding and they did not let us down. Jojo and Issac are a husband and wife duo that have a deep love for music and were so easy to work with. So many other DJs we saw or talked to had that creepy vibe or seemed too old to even understand the direction we wanted, so very different from Jojo and Issac. We shared with them our vision and the type of music we liked and they took it from there and nailed it. From the ceremony to reception hour to the dance floor, the music fit the feel and vibe of the wedding perfectly. And not just the music, but the lighting they brought in complemented it all so well. The owner of the house we had the wedding at mentioned several times that he kept forgetting he was in his backyard, his patio was transformed into a dance club, in a good way.
