Wedding Ideas Inspired by The Great Gatsby

Since I live in Seattle, I get extra excited when Seattle wedding professionals submit their work to me :)  Like this group who designed a wedding shoot inspired by The Great Gatsby.  I love the nod to Art Deco, the gorgeous beaded wedding dress, and the bits of sparkle on the table.  Plus, I favor champagne as a drink of choice, so I loved the bubbly details (I wonder if they really drank it during the shoot!?  YUM!!).  The cake by The Sweet Side and the bouquet are my favorite details … LOVE both color combos so much!  I hope this gets you excited for the movie which will be released soon (May 10, 2013)!  Below is a write-up by Megan of Clutch Events:

What we came up with was a Gatsby-esque vibe with colors in black, white, gold and splash of sparkle. It feels vintage, but it has more of a city, refined look. I totally dig mixing black and white with metallics! It’s clean and simple, yet elegant. We added a bit of deep plum in the flowers to give them some warmth. I think we married a ‘fun’ theme and a mature look quite nicely:)

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby and am inspired by the descriptions of glamorous parties with their crisp suits, bobbed hairdos, champagne glasses & scotch tumblers of the roar’n 20s. We wanted to include an art deco feel without using too many prints. We used a few stripes, a bit of chevron and tied in a art deco font for the table numbers and place cards. There is something a bit more masculine about this era and I wanted to bring in that feel to the shoot.

We dressed our model in a high necked, beaded gown from La Belle Reve and vintage diamonds from Alana. She was wearing over $35K in diamonds, pearls and rubies! We kept her hair soft in a retro wave and gave her a pop of color with a coral lip. Our groom was in a black & white tux, a black bowtie and wore saddle shoe wingtips – oh yeah! We wanted him to have an old school look without feeling ‘costumey’.

Bash & Bloom designed the brides bouquet and the centerpieces. The different white and deep purple anemone’s blended perfectly with the wispy greenery and hanging flowers. We had one larger arrangement for the centerpiece and then played with several smaller arrangements throughout the table. B&B glittered the bottoms of several vases to bring in the golds and sparkle while keeping the rest a black matte and glossy white with milk glass

We kept a few items true to the times by using the mercury glass votives and milk glass, but then spruced it up with the stripped straws and pom pom swizzle sticks. The Sweet Side lined their two tier cake with white gumballs to look like pearls, a black & white stripped ribbon with a sugar flower. She used just a few design elements so it wasn’t overwhelming, and it came out so fun!!

I’m quasi obsessed with the champagne favors that Heathoriginal created for us. She glittered individual bottles of champagne leaving the gold top and added a tag by using old black & white photos of couples from the 20s. SO adorable! And fun for guests who want their champagne with dinner prior to toasting.

We chose Bastille as our backdrop – they are a French restaurant that offers private event space in their dark wood, back bar and on their outdoor, covered pavilion. Their popularity as a spot for rehearsal dinners, small receptions and intimate weddings is starting to grow. We didn’t linen the table tops in either space of the restaurant and we kept their woven black/nude chairs. I like that couples are using the true aesthetic of their venues a bit more and not feeling the need to cover everything up. Bastille was great with their high ceilings, giant chalkboards and shimmering chandeliers.

After the photoshoot we slipped across the street and took a few photos in the lobby of the Ballard Inn (a boutique hotel in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle). Their black/white couch and black mirror worked perfectly with our aesthetic! The other photos outside were taken at the Ballard Locks.
